History of Dalton School

  • August 1970
    Institute of Special Education Class for Gifted Children established at Kawaijuku Educational Institution (Nagoya) to develop the intellect of young children between the ages of 2 and 12 years.
  • January 1973
    Kawaijuku Special Education Institute for Children with Advanced Learning Capabilities established.
    Professor Yoshihisa Shioda of Nagoya University joins as an advisor.
  • April 1973
    Demand grows for comprehensive preschool education. Kawai-juku Preschool opened to run four-days a week.
  • September 1973
    SGK intelligence tests (individualized) developed under Professor Shioda.
  • January 1975
    Name changed from Kawai-juku Preschool to Kawai-juku Preschool for Gifted Children.
  • March 1976
    Partnership established with the Dalton School of New York. Marion B. Plexico welcomed as an advisor. Professor Hiroshi Azuma of University of Tokyo and Professor Toshio Tatsumi of Tokyo Gakugei University become advisors,
    and the name Kawaijuku Special Education Institute for Children with Advanced Learning Capabilities is changed to Kawaijuku Dalton School.
  • April 1976
    Tokyo Dalton School opened at Ochanomizu in Tokyo.
  • April 1977
    Name changed from Special Education Kindergarten to Dalton Preschool.
    Four-day-a-week Dalton Preschool established at the Tokyo Dalton School.
  • April 1979
    Tokyo Dalton School is relocated to Uehara in Shibuya-ku. Name changed from Dalton Preschool to First Program, changing to five- day-a-week program.
  • January 1982
    In Nagoya, the school is relocated to a newly constructed school building and name changed to Kawaijuku Dalton School.
  • April 1982
    Two years old class is opened.
  • April 1983
    Marion B. Plexico appointed the director of Tokyo Dalton School and honorary director of Kawaijuku Dalton School.
  • April 1984
    Play Group established at the Tokyo Dalton School for two-years old.
  • June 1988
    Kawaijuku Dalton School’s classes for elementary school children are relocated to a new school building.
  • August 1990
    Marion B. Plexico appointed the director of Kawaijuku Dalton School.
  • April 1991
    One-year old class is opened at Kawaijuku Dalton School.
  • September 2000
    Classes for elementary school children, one-year old and two-years old at Kawaijuku Dalton School are relocated to a new school building.
  • April 2001
    The names Dalton School Nagoya and Dalton School Tokyo are designated as common appellation instead of Kawaijuku Dalton School and Tokyo Dalton School.
  • April 2002
    Marion B. Plexico becomes the supervisor and Toyoko Nishikawa is appointed the director.
  • April 2005
    Eiji Hoshiai appointed the director of Dalton School Tokyo.
  • January 2009
    Dalton School Tokyo’s new school building is completed.
  • April 2010
    Mitsuru Azumi appointed the director of Dalton School Nagoya.
  • April 2016
    Naoko Matsuda appointed the director of Dalton School Tokyo.
  • April 2022
    Naori Ito appointed the director of Dalton School Nagoya.
  • December 2023
    Dalton School Nagoya’s new school building is completed.
  • January 2024
    All courses at Dalton School Nagoya are relocated to the new building.
